Welcome to the Sydney Windows User Group. The aim of the SWUG is to support and provide advice to consumers, power users and small business in regards to the Microsoft Windows Operating System and related products.

After another awesome Sydney Windows User Group this week (which i couldn’t attend..apparently my gadgets weigh more than i expected!) i wanted to say thanks to everyone who attended especially Craig Bailey for running the night, Jeff Alexander for hosting us, Gordon Ryan for his awesome presentation and demos and to Tony Hollingsworth and Jodie Miners for tweeting all night so i could still participate.

I’ve now uploaded the June presentations to the SWUG Skydrive and be sure to check our Gordon’s blogpost on recreating his Windows 7 streaming demo from SWUG.

Just a quick reminder about the July SWUG, it will be on Wednesday 8th July at Microsoft Australia from 6-8:30pm. I’m finalising the content over the weekend, so look out for a fresh blog post next week with more details!

windows_media_center This month’s meeting of the Sydney Windows User Group is coming up next Wednesday 10th June 2009 and will be all about Windows media Media MEDIA!!!

Date: Wednesday 10th June 2009

Time: 6pm – 9pm

Venue: Microsoft Australia – 1 Epping Road, North Ryde

6:00pm – Windows News and Q&A

Nicholas (now with just one working arm) will present this month’s Windows News including the Windows 7 RTM timelines, Windows Touch Pack, Office 2010 and the Zune HD. If you have any news articles you’d like covered on the night email windowsusergroup@live.com or mention it on the night.

6:30pm – Windows 7 – The new media experience (Part 1)

With more and more households having multiple computers, Windows 7 lets you easily manage and access your digital media, irrespective of where you have stored it, or where you happen to be.  In this session, Gordon Ryan will walk you through the different options for available in Windows 7 for consuming media using traditional methods such as Windows Media Player as well as the options for internet streaming and using devices such as the XBOX 360 as a media extender.

7:15pm – Pizza and soft drink (please donate $5 to help cover the cost of Pizza)

7:40pm – Windows 7 – The new media experience (Part 2)

8:10pm – Quick chat around future content and group direction

We’ll open up the floor to discuss the planned future content sessions as well as group membership, meeting times and community involvement.

SWUG May meeting wrap-up

After an AWESOME meeting this week, I wanted to say thanks again to everyone who came and Wednesday night and to those who emailed and couldn’t make it (we look forward to seeing you at the next one!). The night went really well with plenty of Windows 7 installs, great content (thanks to @jeffa36 and @craigbailey) and the most interactive group I’ve ever seen at a User Group!

I’ve uploaded the May presentations to the SWUG SkyDrive (you’ll need a Windows Live ID to sign in) and I’ll be adding some photos to our SkyDrive soon too. Also don’t forget to check out the other Windows 7 RC Install fest photos

Some quick details on our next meeting, it will be focussing on Media on your Windows PC including Windows Media Centre, Windows Media Centre Extenders (including Xbox 360) and Windows Media Player. We’ll also be keeping up a regular news sessions with Q&A at the beginning of each meeting. I look forward to seeing you all again on Wednesday 10th June at 6pm!

5:00pm – let the Windows 7 install fest begin!

From 5pm we’ll have Windows 7 RC install DVDs ready for you to upgrade your laptops, Tablet PCs, UMPCs and netbooks. As an added bonus, attendees of the Sydney Windows User Group will also be able to install:

6:00pm – Introduction and overview of the Sydney Windwos User Group

Nicholas Rayner (aka aussienick) will give provide an overview of the Sydney Windows User Group including the group leadership, future content, web presence and how YOU can get involved.

6:10pm – Windows News with a Q&A Session

Nicholas will continue on with a News session related to group, this will become a regular session of the User Group. If you have any news articles you’d like covered on the night email windowsusergroup@live.com or mention it on the night.

6:30pm – Windows 7 RC overview and demonstration

Nicholas will provide an overview of the Windows 7 RC focussing on benefits to consumers and small businesses. The demonstration will focus on the major new features in Windows 7 including:

· Taskbar & jump lists

· Aero enhancements

· Windows XP Mode

· and more!

7:15pm – Break – Pizza and soft drink (please donate $5 to help cover the cost of Pizza)

7:40pm – Windows Touch

Craig Bailey will provide an overview of Windows Touch in Windows 7 including a demonstration using the HP Touchsmart PC. This is where you’ll get a chance to experience Windows Touch first hand and give it a try yourself.

Announcing the Sydney Windows User Group

Announcing the newly formed Sydney Windows User Group (SWUG) lead by Nicholas Rayner and Craig Bailey with the help of Microsoft Australia (first meeting details below). The aim of the SWUG is to support and provide advice to consumers, power users and small business in regards to the Microsoft Windows Operating System and related products. The user group will showcase the Windows Operating System and provide demonstrations of key components of Windows can be used both at home and in your business.

The User Group will also focus on related Microsoft Products including Windows Mobile, Windows Home Server, Microsoft Office, Windows Live and XBOX 360 and how they can be used to enhance the Windows user experience.
